A cold Thanksgiving day
As
we head into Thanksgiving Day tomorrow, it’s going to be cold. It seemed to me
that it’s been a while since we have had a really cold Thanksgiving day. I checked back over the record book and
sure enough it has been. The last
time it was this cold was back in 2002 when the Thanksgiving high was right
about where it will be tomorrow…in the upper 20s. Last year was actually the warmest since then…61 degrees. So
this year is some 30 degrees colder than last year.
Looking back at the Thanksgiving high temperatures for specific years:
2012 - 61 degrees
2011 - 45 degrees
2010 - 54 degrees
2009 - 46 degrees
2008 - 39 degrees
2007 - 58 degrees
2006 - 56 degrees
2005 - 35 degrees
2004 - 48 degrees
2003 - 44 degrees
2002 - 28 degrees
(High temperatures listed above are official readings from the National Weather Service at Akron/Canton Airport.)
Wednesday Forecast, November 27
Update: As of 5:30am, 4 inches of snow had fallen at the Weather Center and 88.9/WSTB Studios. The general snow from the storm has moved east. Lake Effect will affect us today.
WINTER STORM WARNING FOR

with lake effect snow and squalls. The wind will cause blowing and drifting
of the snow.

lake effect snow band.
A morning high of 32, then

Pre-Thanksgiving Snowfall (discussion)
The snow has moved into the area and will continue to fall throughout the night and into tomorrow. Later tonight the winds will shift to the north and that will kick in lake effect. Tomorrow the winds will kick up to between 10mph and 20mph causing blowing and drifting. Travel could be a bit nasty at times tomorrow.
The forecast amounts listed in the post below are the expected snowfall totals, but some areas could get more if they get stuck under a lake effect snow band.
The snow should back off by tomorrow evening and the rest of the holiday week is looking pretty good.

The combination of the storm system moving up the Appalachians and lake effect will drop about a half foot of snow across the areas east of Akron by late Wednesday. Areas west of Akron will end up with slightly less. Of course with lake effect, snowfall amounts could vary greatly over the area.

Pre-Thanksgiving Snow
This is going to be fun. Not that we are going to necessarily get a lot of snow, but because the cutoff of the snow is going to be right across Portage and Summit counties. While the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for 6-8 inches of snow, I don't think we will see that much locally. The heavier amounts will fall near the Ohio/Pennsylvania line.
Here's what I'm looking at happening. I'll update these numbers if they change, but at the moment (5:30pm on Monday) here's what it looks like:
Tuesday
3pm - By this time the area will generally have an inch or less of new snow.
9pm - The Akron area should have about an inch of new snow. Portage County will have 1-2 inches.
Wednesday
3am - 1 inch Akron west; 1-2 inches Akron east; 2-3 inches south and east of Kent and Ravenna
9am - 1-2 inches in Summit County; 2-3 inches in Portage County
3pm - 1-2 inches Akron west; 2-3 inches Akron east; 3-4 inches in northern Portage County
9pm - 2-3 inches in Summit County; 3-4 inches in Portage County
After 9pm, the snowfall will be light and not amount to more than an inch or so.
Below is a snowfall from our friends at AccuWeather. It shows the total snowfall for the area by 9pm Wednesday.

A cold front will slide across the area tonight and give us a little light snow. Of greater significance will be a storm moving up the Appalachians Tuesday and Wednesday. We could see up to 4 inches of snow from that system.
